Get Them While You Can!

Feather headbands are one of our super hot commodities, and right now we have a great assortment of color and pattern options. Reasonably priced at $33, these are a fun way to get fancy without breaking the bank. For all you Project Runway fans out there, you know Kenley can't seem to go a day without wearing one of these!

Gettin' Festive

Check out our scary/ hot Halloween mannequin; she's visiting our downtown location (305 Church St.) for the month. She' s on loan from Nicki Alhstrom, artist extraordinaire. Thanks, Nicki!

Here's April, styling up Mannequin with a gorgeous red Tano bag.

A little bird (named April) told me Martha Stewart is selling a kit at Michael's to make pumpkin decorations just like these. I can't believe she stole my idea! No, seriously, I guess she just has good taste. Ha! Happy Halloween everybody!

Yummy New Products

We received a spankin new assortment from two of our fabulous designers.

Pyrrha is a great Canadian jewelry company specializing in creating unique jewelery from vintage seals. Many of their pieces center around Greek and Roman mythology and have fabulous meanings. Each piece comes with a beautiful card describing the seal used to make the item. By far the most popular of the line are the initial necklaces.
Also new to the jewelry cases this week is a great new collection from Swallow. Swallow is a fabulous eclectic company based in Brooklyn, NY. Ria Charisse creates unique jewelery from the very unexpected. These funny bees make great tacks for your bulletin board but I plan to add them in a nice swarm on the walls of my living room. Cast from semiprecious and precious metals all of the Swallow jewelery are amazing pieces of art. Back in stock is the fabulous double wing necklace and the ever popular humminbird skull necklace.

Hot Time, Summer in the City

Back of my neck gettin'....oh you should know the rest. Unless of course you are under 30 then maybe not so much. Well here is the train of thought....it is really hot outside already and it is summer and a whole bunch of us Finches went to see Sex in the City last week.

I have to say I personally did not love the movie. It was ok but very predictable and very full of product placement. And I love product placement! But oh the fashion was great! I have always thought that the fashion in the show was a bit over the top-at least on Carrie. Never anything you would see on a daily basis in NYC. Maybe every once in a while but definitely not with the frequency Carrie gave us.

And who could believe she could afford that apartment and those shoes! I can tell ya that the digs she had ran her an easy $3500 a month at the least. And the new place she and Big find in the movie, not even near 'the normal people can fathom' range. Across from the Met on 5th Ave? We are talking many, many millions. But oh the fashion!

The hair accessories alone would make you salivate. So you know this little beauty? It reminds me of this little guy we had at the store. And then Samantha has on this cool necklace that reminds me so much of Jan Michaels (new shipment arriving mid June!). But alas the fashion is beyond many of our humble Tano budgets. Who need Louis V when you can have a Tano anyway!

Speaking of Tano check in for a post about the new fall colors soon!

OOOhhh, New Goodies!

The Abas framed clutch is quickly becoming a staff favorite.
We received a brand new shipment today!

Where did that month go?

Do you ever have those missing packets of time that utterly confuse you? Well the month of May was lost somewhere between a big ole trip to NYC and the end of the school year!

First of all NYC was a super fun time. Sarah went with the Boss Finch and I to the Accessories Show and a few clothing shows. We had a great time because there was great stuff to tempt us. This trip was all about late summer transitional clothing and the beginnings of fall. We ordered the ever popular Tulle Vintage Wool Coat in a variety of new colors. Get ready for rich jewel tones like Raspberry, Blue, Gold, Red and Brown. The great jewel tones carried over into the leather goods too! Tano will be bright this Fall! Raspberry, Grape, Red, Yellow and Blue dominated the color palette of our friends from Spain. Hobo International is on the same bandwagon with a remarkably similar color palette. Look for all of those to arrive at the end of July (yes wool coats in July but we have to take them when we can get them!).

No major star sightings this time except for Mariska Hargitay with her little family outisde of ABC Carpet and Home. Sarah and i did have a great Cinco de Mayo with our friends from Baked Beads, David and Laura. Check out the view from this roof top deck. David has a friend with this lovely condo overlooking Midtown and the Hudson River. If you squint real hard and zoom in you can see the Statue of Liberty behind us.

And then all of a sudden it was the end of May! I have a little chicken that just finished her first year of school. She loved it and we loved her teacher, her school, her new friends...well everything was just delightful. But that last month was a killer! So many activities and not enough time!

But here we are in the midst of summer. I am taking advantage of Summer Hours and Sarah is doing a great job running the show. I did take the time to order a great new selection of Zina Kao necklaces and new stock from a few other popular friends. Look for new goodies soon!

Summer at the Finch will be quite exciting!
The top pic is a new installation at the Lever House of giant steel Hello Kitty sculptures.

Earth Day

Fire Finch is celebrating Earth Day in a big way!

Beginning April 3rd until Earth Day, April 22nd, Fire Finch will donate a portion of the profits from a select group of items to the Nature Conservancy. The items include the ever popular Envirosax, the super cute owl mugs and boxes as well as a perfect assortment of sterling silver animal stud earrings.

And to make it fun for you we are having a drawing for a $100 Gift Certificate! How do you enter the drawing you may ask? Just be a little green! Every time you refuse a paper bag and packaging you can enter to win the Gift Certificate! Check out the rules below.....

Here at the Finch we have been making an effort to be a little Greener. We have eliminated paper towels at our sinks in favor of cute hand towels. We are recycling all of our office paper and cardboard boxes. We purchased a Brita Filter to cut out bottled water. We have started switching out our light bulbs for the new compact fluorescent bulbs. We are upgrading our surge protectors to conserve electricity. We open the doors instead of turning on the AC. We walk or bike to work when we can. We all have Envirosax and take them to the grocery and on errands (most stores now give you cash back for bringing your own bags!). And last but not least we keep looking for cool new enviro friendly products to bring to all of you out there!

So remember, Kermit was wrong, It is Easy to be Green!

Rules:
You can enter every visit to the Finch that you refuse a packaging and a paper bag.
Only one entry per visit, per day.
You must leave us your name and email so we can let you know if you won. Write clearly!
Entries must be submitted between opening April 3rd and closing on Earth Day.
Drawing will be made after closing on Earth Day. Winner will be notified on Earth Day by email.
Winner will have 48 hours to respond and one week to pick up the Gift Certificate.
All of our usual policies regarding Gift Certificates apply. It will Expire October 22, 2008 and is not redeemable for cash. We cannot replace a lost or stolen Gift Certificate.

New Arrivals

Jan has really done it this time. I think little J-Baby is going lose money this week in her paycheck after her Jan shopping spree. Everyone is dying over the new Pretty in Lace design (picture in (a) and (b) above). The delicate lace overlay on pearl or green glass is too amazing to describe. Pictured in (c) is the lovely deco bracelet available in brass or silver. I think the cuff design in (d) is very Aztec. Moving along to the French is the cute bow ring with black onyx button pictured in (e). And maybe one of her best selling designs is the Book of Love locket shown closed in (f) and open in the last picture. The locket has room for 4 pictures and is on a 32" chain for length and layering.

Of course we have much more so keep checking for new designs here or pop in the store!
Also look out for us in the April issue of Lucky! Or so we think, the fact checkers called again to make sure we were the real deal!

Fly Fly Butterfly

Well the cookies were for my Ella's Kindergarten class but the Marimekko tray is totally the Finch.

I love the bold prints and whimsical patterns of Marimekko. Nothing says Spring more boldly than a bright sunny print.

Speaking of Spring....the new Spring Tano has arrived and can you believe one of the new colors is almost exactly the same shade of blue as our yummy friend up there? Pool Blue, Fudgesicle, Dandelion, Leaf, Watermelon and Apricot are all waiting here for you in the best styles of the bunch! I think maybe the folks at Tano were a little hungry when naming the new colors.....

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive about Tano is "How does the leather wear? Well the leather gets that homey, loved broken in look over time. I personally am rather rough on my bags. I have two kiddos and a busy life so mine gets put on the floor, under the plane seat, on top of the dog, under the pool chair, on top the fridge and pretty much slung anywhere you can think of (even in the deep end of the pool at the Y, thanks Ella!). So mine wear a little faster than say Sarah's bags because hers never touch any of the above said things.

To compensate from my tough love I buy the darker colors because they wear a little better than the lighter ones. But you know it is fine leather (also meaning thin and baby soft) that is treated with a high gloss finish so it will wear, especially at the creases and edges. So keep the end result in mind when looking at the pretty spring lovelies and ask to see one of my 'distressed' samples.

Urban Safari

It's almost Springtime, and at Fire Finch we're already gearing up for the new season! We love all the fresh colors and funky prints that are taking the places of Wintery black and grey. Hobo International has produced a Spring line of leather goods in colors like ivory, maple, straw, and wasabi. As I tend to favor the bold, my personal favorite is the metallic leopard (as pictured) ! We carry quite an array of Hobo's small leather goods, and we have the new Spring line in stock.

Lovely Little Finch

A couple posts ago we mentioned our amazing new feather headpieces- and guess what! We now have an even bigger selection!!! The shapes and sizes vary, as do the colors: blue, hot pink, celery, espresso, black, winter white, red, and more. Each piece is a unique combination of feathers, rhinestones, and raffia. These are so much fun; they are the perfect accessory for the fashion forward girl that wants something you won't see on everyone. Our lovely Finch in the photo, Kali, is wearing her black one out to dinner!

**as a side note--I am becoming a little obsessesd with these headpieces. While in the Big Apple this past trip I came across this gaggle of fancy French women in the Lever House. They all had on these awesome and rather expensive looking hair accessories. I was too shy and too un-chic feeling to speak to them (they were uber fancy and only speaking rapid French) so I had no idea if they were coming from an event for Fashion Week or were just into the headgear. But I couldn't stop thinking of them. Well then I was walking down this long dark street to buy glass glitter which is literally glitter made from glass in this little set of shops when I came across a hat company going out of business. How could I resist rows of dusty boxes going at cut rate prices? Well I dug and dug and found a few awesome handmade hat adornments. Sarah crafted them into headbands today and they are awesome! I wish I had room in my suitcase for the hat blocking machine and crate of antique hat blocks but oh well. I did easedrop on a dapper young fellow who was buying a set of antique commercial Singer sewing machines. He was also negotiating the price on several hat making machines and blanks (did you know hats started out as floppy, amorphous blobs of fabric?) . Are hats making a hip comeback? Oh I hope so!!!!

Tano in Africa

So here is Cora in Liberia with a Pakistani United Nations Peacekeeper! Strangely enough he was handling security for an Irish Ambassador. However is this perhaps the first Tano in Liberia? I am going to say yes!

She has also taken Tano sightseeing! So far all seems to be good for her in Africa, thank goodness! We wish her well!

Thursday, January 17, 2008

Oooh La La

I have to admit a small obsession...I love all types of headwear. Hats, barettes, headbands, and headpieces oh my! The little bits of raffia, feathers, and ribbon just bring a smile to my face and a light to my eyes.

I sneak in fanciful bits of fun every chance I get here at the Finch. We have had such luck with the beautiful French feather headbands from Ophelie that I had to try these lovelies when I saw them. We have a variety of colors and sizes to fit any need (or lack of need...they are just so pretty!)

New York New York

Oh, Times Square....I really do try to avoid Times Square with all of the crowds, the noise and the general flash of it all but I somehow found myself trekking across 42nd St and look! It is pretty cool to look up and see that tall column of flashy lights. Come to think of it, I have never taken this obligatory tourist photo of Times Square. Maybe I feel like I am marking myself as a tourist if I whip out the camera in this very tourist oriented neighborhood when I usually try so hard to just blend in with the cool crowd of die hard New Yorkers. Oh well......

So New York was a whirlwind of buying and visiting friends. I saw lovely Lizzie who has been in the city for almost 6 months now! We had a great time catching up and eating yummy food. And of course I shopped! Girls get ready for very pretty ethnic inspired dresses and lots of bangle bracelets! The trends are definitely headed the oh so casual ethnic direction.

Next month I head back for the Gift show to search out the cooolest of the cool that I can find! But by the end of that trip I am sure I will feel like the picture below and be ready to be back in good ole Nashville!
